November First Friday

highwirehellHalloween has come and gone and the icy grip of winter will soon be upon us, but for this last chapter of fall be sure to come out and enjoy the crisp air outside on First Friday.  This November has puppet shows, scandalous photography and a hand stitched heaven; what could be greater?  Come on by for your fix of art/food/fun/drink.

And a sneak peek for next month: we’re gearing up for a Frankford Avenue Holiday Event next First Friday, with your favorite stores and galleries getting decked out all festive like.  So make sure a shopping spree on the avenue is on your list for next month.  Rumor has it there will be some new faces on Frankford just in time for Christmas…

The Walking Fish Theatre

Walking Fish Theatre proprietor Stan Heleva has adapted and directed the Brecht’s classic play “The Good Person of Szechwan” in the form of a puppet show. Rooted in Chinese folklore and heavy with moral conflict, the show promises not to disappoint. Tickets are available atwww.walkingfishtheatre.com.  Show debuts at 8pm.

Atlantis: The Lost Bar

Personal recommendation: stop by Atlantis before First Friday kicks off for their happy hour with a dollar off all of their already cheap PBC beers on draught.  Then come back for a nightcap and a DJ performance at 10pm. Chalez Francisco a.k.a. Chuck D. of Phil Moore Browne and Public Record spinning from his collection of LP’s and 45’s all night long.

This month will feature an exhibition of nude photography from  three different photographers.  Pete Checchiafeatures elements of the nude form as an abstraction, intertwined with architectural details.Benjamin Long’s series works with realistic, custom-made doll parts, highlighting the naked beauty of the tiny sculptures.  Finally, David Miles explores the the female form in his series of  sensual black and white photographs.

The best little deli in Fishtown will be hanging the artwork of local artist Brian Cote on the walls, shelves and meat cases of their humble business.  Cote’s show “Bikini Girls” showcases his pop art, painted interpretations of, well, girls in bikinis.
